What Should We Wear?

The Mwangi Family

"What should we wear?"

This is one of the most common questions I receive  from my clients. While I claim no expertise in fashion - for years, my wardrobe consisted of scrubs and hiking clothes - I do know how to make you look great in the images we will create together. Below are a few tips and tricks for dressing for the success of your portrait photo session.

Should We All Wear the Same Style Shirt?

I typically do not recommend everyone wear the same colors in the same styles unless that is something you really want. Having everyone wear assorted designs of the same color or even different shades of the same or complementary colors works well since it adds dimension and character. One combo for couples that I just love is where one wears a print (like a dress with a nice print) and the other then wears a solid color to match something within the print.

What Color Do You Recommend?

The color I have seen a lot this year is blue. Different shades and patterns of blue with complementary colors like orange look great! Check out a color wheel to see what colors complement one another or take a look at these great pairings for some ideas.  If blues aren't your thing and you are still looking for ideas, just ask and I can help you come up with something that works for you.

Dress For Comfort First

Nature portrait photography produces some spectacular images – but if you are uncomfortable, it will show in your final images. Stick with outfits each of you are comfortable in – an hour may not seem long to be out in the elements, but an hour in 90° heat or 30° cold can become quite uncomfortable if you aren’t dressed appropriately.

What About Inclement Weather?

I will keep a close eye on the weather for the time and location of your session and reschedule if inclement weather arises. I am equipped to conduct your photo session in the rain. I do have a transparent plastic umbrella and a cream/black umbrella that you can use if it does rain. Rain can also make for an interesting and pretty setting for your session – so if it rains, do not be discouraged! Same goes for cloudy days – I love cloudy days for photo sessions because the clouds create a smooth, diffuse light to create beautiful images for you.

Props, Puppies, Etc.!

If you are wondering about how you can make your experience personal and memorable, feel free to bring along any props that are special to you. I want your session to be unique to you, so if that means bringing your four-legged family members along or props that tell your story, please do. We can incorporate them into your photos in a fun way! Whatever you want in your photos, I will do my best to make it happen. I have a few items we can use in your session, such as blankets and parasols. Feel free to change into as many outfits as there is time for.
