Q: Cynthia, thank you so much for offering up these expert tips on how best to use flowers in a professional photography session. Tell us a bit about yourself and your floral business.

A: Sure, I’m Cynthia P. Klebonis, owner of CPK Floral Designs right here in Leesburg, Virginia. I’m a Philadelphia native but have called Loudoun County my home for the past 14 years. I started my business five years ago because I have a passion for creating beautiful flower arrangements that speaks to my soul. My business mantra is "Isn't it time for an Infusion of Happiness?" because I believe flowers express your love, gratitude, congratulations, and emotional support - I find it amazing how much a single act of kindness can be extraordinarily meaningful to from the design perspective, the principle of rhythm, harmony, and unity.

Q: What are some unique ways you recommend including flowers into a photography session?

A:  I love working with couples getting ready to photograph the biggest commitment of their lives. It is like planning a historic event. It must perfectly represent the couple’s own tastes and style. When I approach a wedding, I think about it in terms of photo sets. The art is in naturally weaving a rhythm of flowers through each of the chosen sets with elegance. A command of the details at the background, foreground, middle ground, and floor makes a tremendous difference in the final images. The photos are a feast for the eyes as the gaze moves through all the features with delight resting on the primary subjects with awe.

For an engagement session, I would recommend wearing a floral wrist corsage that compliments the wrist when photographing the engagement ring.

For a maternity session, I would recommend a floral crown for the mom-to-be. Such a beautiful display of happiness and hope for the future.

For high school or college graduation portraits, a single or triple rose handheld bouquet makes for a lovely addition to the photos.

Q: What type of floral services and arrangements do you offer? What is your service area?

A: When you work with me you get your own personal professional florist. I make it a point to get to know you and the occasion that you would like to commemorate with flowers. I love creating specialty flowers for life events like weddings, anniversaries, new babies, birthdays, proms, graduations, all the holidays, and every day in between. Always a special touch from my heart for sympathy and funeral designs as well. My clients always receive a memorable piece of floral art that will be treasured.

For daily arrangements, I service the Leesburg area and all surrounding towns in Loudoun County extending out to Point of Rocks, Maryland. For weddings and events, my service area extends out to Washington DC, Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland.

Q: For a floral crown that would perfectly accompany a maternity photography session, how far in advance should a client contact you? How about for a floral bouquet for a couples/engagement photography session?

A: Of course, I always have fresh flowers in my floral refrigerator and can whip up something with a few hours’ notice, if necessary. However, if you want a truly customized floral piece, as soon as you book your photography session, reach out to me. With enough notice, I will be able to bring in the perfect flowers in the colors that best suit your style.

Q: Your wedding floral arrangements are spectacular! When should the happy couple reach out to you to get the planning process started? What is involved with planning for a large event like a wedding?

A: Thank you so much! Once the location is booked and a date is set, that is the best time to start booking all your wedding vendors. As your professional florist, we will start the Wedding Floral Planning process with a consultation to identify the selection of a general color palette. This leads into my customized creation of a Wedding Floral Mood Board with my recommendations for all types of flowers in the chosen palette. We will have further consultations about the types of personal flowers you will need for your wedding party, as well as how you would like to set up your ceremony and reception with flowers. I will also develop a personalized plan to move the various flower arrangements from ceremony to reception to get the most use out of your investment.

Q: During the photography session, what tips do you have to properly showcase the flowers and keep them looking fresh, especially in the hot summer weather?

A: The care and handling of your flowers starts in my studio and makes all the difference in their long-term vitality, especially in hot summer weather. All my flowers are properly hydrated in a flower preservative solution and sprayed with an anti-transpirant that reduces evaporation and enhances their beauty and longevity.

Q: How can people get in touch with you?
