I Love Spending Time in Nature, Reading, and Crocheting

Being out in nature is one my biggest passions. Growing up I spent a lot of time in the forest playing and hiking. It has always been a place of peace and comfort to me. I enjoy introducing people to the joys of spending time in nature, especially because I know not everyone has had the same opportunity to connect with nature like I have. I have completed the 52 Hike Challenge three years in a row and am even the Virginia Chapter leader. I am happy to give hiking tips and trail recommendations, just message me.

I read a lot – like to the point where I could probably open my own bookstore with all the books I have in my house. I set a goal for myself each year to read 40 books – I have come close each year but haven’t quite hit that mark – read 39 in 2020. Stephen King is hands down my favorite author – I have read every one of his books (probably multiple times). I also like reading non-fiction books where I can learn something new about how the brain/mind works. I am always looking for new titles to add to my bookshelf, so if you are a bibliophile too, please share your top picks – and I’m happy to share mine.

Growing up my mom, brother, and I lived with my grandparents, so I learned so much from them. One of the things I learned from my grandfather was how to crochet – he always had some crochet project he was working on. A few years ago, I picked up this skill again and started crocheting blankets, hats, scarves, and most recently, dog sweaters. I sometimes feel like an old lady as I sit on my couch passing the time crocheting and listening to an audiobook or podcast, but I love it – it is so relaxing.

I Lived in Hawaii Before Moving to Virginia

In 2001, my partner and I made the decision to leave Pennsylvania and move to Hawaii. He and I are an interracial couple and became tired of the racism and hate we experienced in PA, we felt the wonderful mixture of races and cultures in Hawaii would give us a more comfortable place to live our lives together. 18 months after we made our decision to move, we made the leap and did it – we had no jobs, no place to live, no car – but we got there and made it work. We lived there for just over five years and immensely enjoyed it. I so miss the people, the weather, and of course the amazing food!

We eventually moved back to the east coast to Northern Virginia to be closer to family and have been here ever since. At the time we moved back, all four of my grandparents were still alive and I had the amazing opportunity to spend so much time with three of them that have since passed. Prior to the pandemic I was able to get up to PA to visit with my extended family on a regular basis – for now, we have to settle for video chats and phone calls for now, as their health and safety is of the utmost importance.

I Used to Be an ER RN

I have a varied work history – office and front desk work for a motel and restaurant, human resources at a financial institution, consultant work for a non-profit who provide housing and mental health services to the mentally ill who are also homeless, education and accreditation manager for a park and recreation professional association, and Emergency Room /Trauma Registered Nurse. I loved each and every one of these jobs, as they have each brought unique experiences that I can use even today with my photography work. In late 2018, I made the extremely difficult decision to leave my career as an ER RN, one I worked so hard to achieve and excel at, to start my own photography business – I haven’t looked back since, it was the right decision for me and my partner.

Because of my years working as an RN and all the hiking that I do, for years, my wardrobe mainly consisted of scrubs and hiking clothes. While my scrubs are since retired, my current wardrobe can best be described as comfortable-functional. During my photography sessions you will likely see me in hiking gear, as I spend a lot of time squatting, kneeling, sitting, crawling, and sometimes even laying on the ground – yes, even if it is muddy or through a briar patch – I do what I need to create the best images for my clients. And due to the pandemic, you likely won’t see this smile since it will be covered up by my mask, but know the smile is there even if you can’t see it.

Now you know a little about me. I am so looking forward to getting to know you during your photography session – I find the more I know about my clients, the more I can bring out their unique personalities in the images we create together. So don’t be surprised if I ask you about yourself.
